Title:   Empowering Language Learning : Harnessing Generative AI to Advance Language Learning

Abstract:

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools is transforming English Language Teaching (ELT), reshaping how educators design instruction, engage learners, and assess progress. This shift towards a digitally enhanced learning environment offers unprecedented opportunities for personalization, interactivity, and access to authentic language use. From adaptive learning platforms and intelligent tutoring systems to AI-driven chatbots and speech recognition tools, technology is enabling more responsive and learner-centered approaches.

For English language learners, these tools can bridge gaps in exposure, provide real-time feedback, and support differentiated learning paths. However, the effectiveness of AI in education depends greatly on the role of educators—not as passive users, but as facilitators, critical thinkers, and designers of meaningful learning experiences. Equally important is equipping both teachers and students with the digital literacy needed to use generative AI tools confidently and responsibly. Familiarity with these tools can empower learners to take ownership of their progress and help teachers integrate AI in ways that enhance—not replace—pedagogical intent.

Rather than resisting the presence of AI in student study habits, educators can guide learners to use these tools strategically and ethically, encouraging deeper inquiry, creativity, and autonomy. This presentation explores current trends, practical applications, and future directions in AI and digital tool integration in ELT, highlighting how educators can harness these innovations to push students further in their language development instead of working against their use.
